Shetland Islands Council – Scalloway Fish Market

Demolition of existing and construction of new fish market on Shetland

This project was awarded to CHAP Group (Aberdeen) Ltd in October 2018.

Works started on site in December 2018 and reached completion in December 2019 – some 3 months ahead of schedule.
The original Scalloway fish market, which was built in the 1970’s and refurbished and extended in the 1990s, was demolished and replaced with a state-of-the-art building.

A new facility was desperately needed as the amount of fish being landed rose by 600% between 2004 and 2015. Vessels were often turned away and were unable to land their catch due to lack of capacity.

The works included:

  • Construction of a steel framed building with welfare facilities
  • Construction of three chilled compartments with transport corridor
  • Construction of lorry loading bays
  • Construction and surfacing of yard area and deck slab
  • Retaining walls
  • Full installation of lighting, electrical services and all plumbing and water connections
